‘Zo behandelen de VS vrienden niet’ – over valse beloftes en Irakezen in levensgevaar
“One tragic outcome of this war is that the Iraqis who stood with America – the interpreters, embassy workers, and subcontractors – are being targeted for assassination […] And yet our doors are shut. In April, we admitted exactly one Iraqi refugee – just one! That is not how we treat our friends. That is not how we take responsibility for our own actions. That is not who we are as Americans.”
Mooie woorden van Barack Obama tijdens een bijeenkomst in Clinton, Iowa in 2007. Maar het bleef bij woorden, schrijft filmmaakster Beth Murphy in The New York Times. Zij volgde voor documentaire The List het werk van Kirk Johnson, een voormalig medewerker van de United States Agency for International Development (wiki), die zich inzet voor Irakezen die de Amerikanen tijdens de bezetting ondersteunden, maar nu gevaar lopen in eigen land.

In haar opiniestuk roept Murphy op tot actie van Obama die vijf jaar geleden zo vurig sprak over het nakomen van beloftes, maar die sindsdien lijkt te zijn vergeten. Murphy:
“Despite Mr. Johnson’s efforts, there have been far too few resolutions to the stories of persecution and hostility toward our government’s Iraqi allies. Without firm, committed guidance from the president who once spoke so powerfully on their behalf, I am deeply concerned that many of these men and women will remain in danger.”
