“There are those of us who have personal religious convictions on the issue and I think that we as a country need to respect people’s opinions, no matter of where you come down on the issue. That’s been lacking. A lot of people would adhere to the kinds of things Republicans stand for. Last election showed us some of the things we stand for aren’t being received in the proper way.

When you say it’s not a man and a woman anymore, then why not have three men and one woman or four women and one man?” Gohmert asked. “Or why not, you know, somebody has a love for an animal or-? There is no clear place to draw a line once you eliminate the traditional marriage.

En de argumenten worden steeds absurder. Zoals die van Sue Everhart, de voorzitter van de partij in Georgia, die bang is dat de verhaallijn van ‘I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry’ bewaarheid wordt.

You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow. Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.

The question about marriage equality for all Americans is not if it will pass but when. The country has changed, and it’s never going back to the way it was. Though the battles continue, the war is over.
